Golf rounds are often won or lost in the "short game." You will be aware that the short game is much to do with golf chipping and pitching. To succeed in the game of golf, you need to master the art of chipping. A golf chip is completely different from a pitch; pitching puts the golf ball into a higher trajectory and is accomplished with a wedge. Golf chipping comes into play when you are around 30 to 50 feet away from the green. A bad chip is what happens when you hit the golf ball too low or too high. You will either end up with a "fat" chip (also called a "chucker") that goes absolutely nowhere. Another possibility is a "thin" chip (also known as a "skull") that goes flying over the green, giving you an excellent opportunity to chip from the other side. Do you want to know how to hit a good golf chip? Hit the ball first instead of the ground. Some players say that it's like "squeezing" the ball between the club head and the turf. One of the hardest things to do is to accelerate your swing properly. When you're faced with a chip shot, your greatest fear will more than likely be hitting the golf ball too far. Decelerating the golf swing is usually an unconscious result. Slowing down is exactly what you don't want to do. To maintain your acceleration without overrunning the green, take a shorter backswing. A good rule of thumb is that your chipping backswing will probably be from a quarter to a half of your normal backswing. So which of your clubs is best for golf chipping? Golfers argue over the proper club to use. To be honest, the best club for you is that which you like better, the one with which you can control the spin better, and the one that gives you better overall precision. Start by experimenting with each of your clubs to find one that seems to work best. Then spend all your time practicing with that club. A lot of players tend to think that it's better to master one club and vary the distance of your shot with your backswing. By following such a course you don't have to master four or five clubs and then decide which one to use based on distance. Typically, golfers find that a more narrow stance works better for golf chipping. Position yourself closer to the ball and choke up on the club. The ball should be back in your stance to help you hit the ball more solidly. Proficient golf chips are low and aimed at getting the ball rolling as soon as you can. The majority of golf chipping situations don't require a lofted flight. One exception is when your lie puts you behind an obstacle of some kind. If nothing's in the way, then focus on getting to the green without a lot of fanfare. Playing the short game competently usually means you have to get the right feel. You must know the best way to get the feel right is practice. Practicing your chip shots will help you find out which club is suited to you and how to achieve the best form. There is really no requirement to go to the practice range. Stake out an area on any appropriately sized area of grass and then practice landing the ball within the target area and notice how your skill improves.
