You cannot fail to have noticed the increased number of people who seem to be out walking for exercise these days. Walkers come in all shapes, sizes, sexes and ages. Some are clad in body hugging lycra outfits, with the latest top of the range walking shoes and clutching bottles of water or energy drinks. Others are in everyday clothes and wearing old trainers or stout shoes and gently strolling on. That is the joy of walking, nearly everyone can do it, it requires not great skill or training and the equipment can cost as much or as little as you wish. Although walking is good for all ages it is perhaps an pastime which is most beneficial to those who are no longer able to carry out energetic exercise. One remark that non walkers make is along the lines that “you have to walk 10 miles to use up the calories that are in one candy bar”. That may be technically true but they are overlooking the knock on effect. Any exercise and this includes walking will boost your metabolic rate. This increases the amount of calories that your body burns up in a given time. The increased rate does not just stop when you stop walking but carries on for any hours after. If you walk regularly your metabolic rate will permanently increase. Apart from the physical benefits of walking it can also help you relax and take some of the stress out of your life. Whether you live in an urban or rural area you should be able to work out some routes from your home. If you have not taken exercise for some time just start with a short gentle amble and over the weeks build up to a speed and distance you are comfortable with. Also if you have not exercised for a while or have any medical condition you should consult your medical advisor before starting a walking regime. The experts say that five 30 minute spells of light exercise a week will help maintain fitness and that could be just taking the dog for a walk or strolling downtown to the shops. Walking is one of the easiest, most natural forms of exercise and most of us were pretty proficient at it by the time we were two yars old. So if you want to be healthy and help control your weight go and dig out those old trainers, because that is all you need.
