If you really set your mind to it, what would be your grounds for being converted to vegetarianism? Might it be to: Give Animals A Better Existence - Seek A Healthier Lifestyle - Think About Global Warming Issues? Various studies, in support of the theory that most meats can be a potential health hazard, are compelling. Fortunately, there are wholesome vegetarian dishes, that will more than compensate for the meat that is unnecessary in a vegetarian meal. Vegetarians are much less prone to get cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, or diabetes. Vegetarians are a lot less liable to be overweight. Vegetarians do not consume germs carried by dead animals, or remnants of the drugs that were in some perverse way used to keep them alive. Food scandals have occurred in many countries, but a larger scandal is when they are covered up. There was a British Health Minister, who was compelled to relinquish her job and discredited, for stating the truth about salmonella and eggs. Can't really say whether the good lady is vegetarian or not! But, it's not just the eggs that are responsible for disease, but the chickens as well. There has been much advice about not letting them come into contact with other foods, for fear of cross contamination. Vegetarians do not buy the chickens, so they avoid the problem. Obviously there are more reasons for becoming a vegetarian, than protecting yourself from becoming ill. Consider the animals themselves. Were we really born to pack chickens into wire cages, with hardly any space to shift about? Afterwards deform their beaks to prevent them from pecking each other, and stuff them full of drugs, to try to stop them from becoming diseased, because of the filthy conditions imposed upon the unfortunate creatures. Vegetarians know that it is not just poultry, but many other animals that are subjected to the horrors of factory farming techniques. Everybody should be thankful to the oft-criticized media, because they sometimes do draw attention to these issues, and point attention to some issues that some would much prefer to see stifled. Thankfully, there is a good deal of attention concerning global warming, which is without doubt of serious concern, as much to vegetarians as anybody. Nevertheless, it isn't generally understood that animal waste is a major contributor. It is estimated that US livestock turn out more than 100,000 kilograms of waste every second. It is about twenty times more than people. This effluent is a gaseous substance, adding to the methane dispersing into the air from both ends of these animals. It is true that if more of us became vegetarian, fewer animals would be reared. It is evident that there are ecological reasons, and not just health factors for turning to vegetarianism.
