I first started instruction in martial arts when I was 13; gulp, over 30 years with a few short gaps when work and family commitments got too much. Apart from making me feel to some extent old, what I hope it shows you us that I do have some knowledge of this field. Originally I did Tae Kwon Do to Black belt, though I found it to sporty for me and I was already questioning its usefulness. But you do gain a lot from Martial Arts training, but over the years I have been asked what style I would advise. Hopefully I can give some useful pointers to help you. From sport preparation I moved on into trying a few styles until I found Ninjitsu, this is a very unique style of martial art. It is extremely effective as a martial art and the traditional style that I chose, is far more unarmed combat. Ninjitsu is not the style if you want to do sport or are belt obsessed. One of my last instructors used a simple rule for belts, 3 to 6 months you where graded for green belt. Around 6 or 7 years later you became a black belt, in between you where expected to know you where just a better green belt. It was astonishing how many people left because they couldn't handle this, but it is a very useful method of removing poseurs. I also have done a lot of instruction in Krav Maga, the Israeli style of unarmed combat. This is great for new people, very aggressive and effective style. You will learn a lot in the first 12 months, more than in many styles. After that I found it lost the depth that Ninjitsu has, but if you want a good quick efficient learning curve in unarmed combat I would highly urge it. So in answer to what style you should consider I would say either of these two styles are both good, choose depending on your level of commitment and time. If you just wish to gain belts, keep fit and do sports, then most other martial arts will do that for you. Whatever style you decide you will gain a great deal in fitness, self-defence ability and mental ability, so what have you got to lose?
