However in spite of the failure of science to find anything worthwhile in P57 and Hoodia, CSIR granted the San people rights to the Hoodia plant and earnings made from the Hoodia will mean earnings for the San people too.
There have been numerous scientific studies into the appetite suppressant capabilities of the Hoodia plant, and clinical trials have shown that extracts from the Hoodia plant (in particular P57) have shown appetite suppression in rats. Human trials have been non conclusive. Hoodia pills are available in the market that utilise the extracts from the Hoodia plant directly.

As of 2002 the Hoodia plant is now a protected species and growing Hoodia plants requires a special permit.
